Bistort
Persicaria bistorta
Polygonaceae (Knotweed Family)
Native to Europe and Northern Asia. Thrives in damp meadows and boggy margins.
Bistort draws an uncompromising line against loss. It is one of the most forceful astringents in the botanical arsenal. When tissues have lost their tone and vital fluids are leaking from the physical vessel, bistort commands an immediate halt. It binds, it seals, and it fiercely protects structural integrity.

Bistort Sealing Decoction: Simmer 1/2 tsp dried root in 8 oz water for 15 mins. Highly astringent; use for acute, short-term interventions like diarrhea or as a mouthwash for bleeding gums.

In medieval times, it was combined with other fierce botanicals in the famous “plague waters” to aggressively bind the bowels and prevent the loss of vital force.
Used in rootwork to bind a situation or a person. When an energetic leak must be stopped immediately, or a chaotic situation must be brought under strict control, bistort is the anchor.
